The Process

  • Research began with analysing the extant garment and other garments of the period to create a base of knowledge which to create this garment. Paintings were also used as reference to create a clear image and new working drawing for this garment, which I would then use when making.

  • Drafting the pattern on the stand gave me the chance to fit the pattern and style for the body I was fitting, so proportions were correct for their height and shape.

I created a toile which I then fitted on my model and made any necessary adjustments. I could then grasp scale and check all my undergarments created the correct silhouette.

The pattern was then adjusted and ready to be used.

  • Completely hand-sewn, this garment took around 2 months to make. The lace was created by cutting motifs from a corded lace and hand-mounting them on a fine net, this recreated bobbin lace really well.

The rest of the garment was then made with adjustments in mind as would be used for Live Interpretation and therefore needed to be easy to adjust for future performers.
